What Does “Handmade” Really Mean in a Greeting Card?
The word handmade can mean many different things. A card may include a hand-tied ribbon, a decorative element, an original illustration, or an entirely hand-assembled design.
At AT Spectrum Design, the process begins much earlier than the final decoration. Each greeting card starts with original artwork and passes through several creative stages before it is ready to be placed inside an envelope.
It Begins With Original Artwork
Every design begins as an original watercolor painting created by hand. The flower, character, colour palette, and composition are developed as an individual piece of artwork before the card itself exists.
This means the finished greeting card does not begin with a purchased template or a ready-made illustration. It begins with an original creative idea.

The Artwork Is Prepared for Printing
Once the original painting is complete, it is carefully prepared for reproduction. Colour, scale, placement, and detail must all be considered so the printed version preserves the character of the original artwork.
This stage connects traditional painting with professional graphic design. The goal is not simply to copy the artwork, but to translate it successfully into a finished printed piece.
Each Card Is Printed on Premium Cardstock
The finished design is printed on carefully selected premium cardstock. The paper must support the artwork while giving the card a refined texture, weight, and presentation.
Paper is part of the design experience. It affects how the colours appear, how the card feels in the hand, and how the finished piece is perceived when the envelope is opened.
Every Card Returns to the Worktable
Printing is not the final stage. Each individual card returns to the worktable, where decorative elements are added by hand.
Depending on the design, this may include dimensional floral details, ribbon, carefully placed embellishments, or a coordinating envelope finished with a decorative wax seal.
These details are applied one card at a time. They add texture, depth, and individuality that cannot be created by printing alone.
Handmade Is a Process, Not a Single Step
In this type of greeting card, handmade does not refer to only one part of the process.
It includes the original painting, the creative development of the design, the preparation for printing, the selection of materials, and the individual finishing of every card.
The artwork may be reproduced so the design can be shared with more than one person, but every finished card still passes through my hands before it is complete.
Why Reproduce an Original Painting?
An original watercolor painting is a unique artwork. Reproducing it allows the same illustration to become part of several beautifully finished greeting cards while preserving the original creative work.
This makes it possible to offer artistic cards without pretending that every copy is individually repainted from the beginning.
The original artwork remains the foundation. Printing allows it to be shared, while hand-applied details give each finished card its own physical character.
